The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology's Institute of Distance Learning (KNUST IDL) shut down its laptops and threw open its doors nationwide this September as staff from Kumasi to Tamale, Takoradi and across Accra's Kwabenya, Adenta and McCarthy centres, marked the 10th edition of the beloved Fruits and Fitness Day.
What is normally a quiet world of course modules and student records erupted instead into drumming, dancing, and friendly rivalry, as the Institute proved once again that a team that sweats together, stays together.
In Kumasi, the celebration began outside the Casely Hayford Building, where a brisk 2-kilometre walk transformed into a full-blown street parade, complete with thunderous drumming and spirited jama songs all the way to the Paa Joe Sports Stadium.

There, management and staff shed their titles and traded them for trainers, throwing themselves into aerobics, table tennis, draughts, card games, and the crowd-favourite lime-and-spoon race.

The undisputed showstopper, however, was the raucous "pass the balloon" game, which had two teams roaring with laughter as balloons flew overhead and between legs.
Meanwhile, in Tamale, the day opened with push-ups, stretches and light drills before staff dove into an energetic indoor aerobics session that turned into pure team bonding, coordination and encouragement on full display.
Across the capital, Accra's three centres brought their own distinct flavour to the celebrations.
At Kwabenya, Centre Coordinator Mr. Michael Wiafe fired up the crowd with a rousing address before a professional instructor led staff through hiking, aerobics and stretching, all set to music that kept spirits soaring.
The undoubted highlight was a fiercely competitive rope-skipping contest, where champions were rewarded with extra fruit, turning healthy eating into the ultimate prize.

Not to be outdone, McCarthy Centre staff dived into line jump and catch-the-ball games, followed by a thoughtful talk on the power of fruit to fuel the body and fight disease, all capped off with card games, video games, and a cheeky round of rock-paper-scissors for fruit.
At Adenta, football, volleyball and skipping sessions kept the energy high, with staff calling for the celebration to become a permanent fixture on the wellness calendar.
Down the coast in Takoradi, staff joined the nationwide celebration with their own blend of indoor games, brisk walking and aerobics, crowning the session, as every centre did, with a well-earned helping of fresh fruit.

No matter the city, every centre paused for the day's true namesake: a lavish spread of watermelon, pawpaw, pineapple, bananas and oranges, devoured amid laughter and easy conversation.

By the time staff drifted back to their desks, the atmosphere had shifted entirely, buzzing with inside jokes, renewed camaraderie, and the unmistakable glow of a team refreshed.
Ten years in, KNUST IDL's Fruits and Fitness Day has proven itself far more than a wellness event; it is a reminder, delivered anew each edition, that even an institute built around distance learning knows how to bring its people close.

A healthier workforce, after all, is the bread and butter of any successful institution, and workplace wellness is about making employees want to come to work rather than feeling they have to, precisely the spirit Management set out to build across every centre this edition.
As the Institute likes to say: IDL Health Awareness, Healthy Choice Today! A Better Tomorrow!
